Shark cage diving is an amazing and adrenaline filled activity which should not be missed when visiting South Africa.

Shark Cage Diving
The best place for shark cage diving in South Africa, and possibly the world, is Gansbaai. Gansbaai is a small fishing town about 2 hours drive from Cape Town (close to the beautiful seaside town of Hermanus).

The best time of year for shark cage diving is between May and October, however the Great White Sharks can be seen throughout the year. The reason Gansbaai is the Great White Shark capital of the world is due to the huge seal colony that inhabits the nearby Dyer Island. The Cape Fur Seal is the main source of food for sharks. The Great White Shark is a surface feeder so viewing these magnificent sharks is excellent from the boat or just below the surface in the shark cage.

What happens on a dive?
Guests can be picked up from Cape Town and driven to Gansbaai (normally guests are picked up at about 0600 from their hotel) or they can make their own way to Gansbaai. The boat departs around 9:00 am and arrives at the anchoring spot after 20 to 25 minutes. The anchor is lowered, the cage goes into the water, a scent trail is made, and we settle down and wait for the Great White Sharks to appear. Final preparations for the diving are made, and the rest of the day is spent watching, diving in a cage and enjoying the day.

“We went shark cage diving on a beautiful sunny February day. After a briefing from the marine biologist we all walked down to the boat and then the adventure began. After about a 25 minute boat ride we reached our destination and the shark scent trail was laid out and the shark cage went into the water. We just had enough time to put on our wetsuits and get into the cage before the first shark arrived. It came right up against the cage, a truly magnificent experience.” – Adam
