Day 1 JOHANNESBURG - MAUN (Scheduled flight). Maun – Central Kalahari Game Reserve.
Accommodation : Mobile camp / Deception Valley.
On arrival in Maun (midday), guests would be met at airport and transferred onto the vehicle for the drive to the Central Kalahari (approx 4 hours).
NOTE : The back-up crew will already be in the Central Kalahari – camp is set up in advance. Some good game viewing can be expected en route to the camp. Time permitting, after settling in to the tents and having tea / coffee / drinks, a late afternoon game drive is possible.
Day 2 CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE.
Early morning and late afternoon game drives. At first light we would leave camp after coffee / tea and something lite to eat (rusks / muffins). We would drive along the ancient valley systems of Deception and Passarge, and visit the spectacular Sunday’s Pan area. Return to camp by 10 am and enjoy a hearty ‘brunch’ – thereafter you have time to relax in a hammock, or rest until we have a very light snack around 2pm and then head off on another drive in the late afternoon – returning to camp just before sunset.
Not visited by many people, this remote and magnificent wilderness (2nd largest in Africa) offers spectacular scenery and often superb game viewing. The region is justly famous for it’s very large and imposing Lions (they often ‘visit’ the camp at night) and many other interesting mammal species – ie : Cheetah, Brown Hyena, Leopard, Honey Badger, Bat-eared fox, Cape fox, Meerkat (Suricate), Black-backed Jackal, Ground squirell, Oryx (Gemsbok), Springbok, Red Haartebeest, Ostrich, Wildebeest, Duiker, Steenbok, Eland and a staggering variety of birds and reptiles.
Day 3 CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE.
Morning and afternoon game drives as per previous day. We would take guests to another part of the reserve – the region is enormous. The usually complete absence of other people creates a sense of being totally ‘alone’ in one of Africa’s last true wilderness areas – a feeling of complete ‘peace’ that you would remember always. At the end of the afternoon game drive we usually stop for ‘sundowners’ before heading back to the camp – watching the sun set over the Kalahari is a very special treat !
Day 4 CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE - MAUN. (By road – 120km sand track & 70km tar).
Accommodation : Chalets at Island Safari Lodge.
Arrival in Maun between 1 and 2 pm – lunch and rest of the day at leisure. The drive from Central Kalahari is fairly scenic, with a chance of seeing some game en route. Guests would leave camp after breakfast. In Maun guests would have the opportunity to do some last minute shopping for personal things, while guides complete shopping for the days ahead in the delta.
Day 5 MAUN - KHWAI RIVER (northern Moremi boundary).
Accommodation : Camping, as per set up in the Central Kalahari.
Departure after breakfast for the interesting drive to the stunningly beautiful Khwai river region. Expect some wonderful game viewing en route – the specially adapted vehicle allows for maximum comfort and the best possible game viewing opportunities. Guests will drive via the Moremi game reserve and spend most of the day game viewing (picnic lunch included). Late afternoon arrival at the camp.
This campsite is by private arrangement with the local community – it’s location close to the Khwai river is very, very scenic, and is in an area renowned for large concentrations of big game – Elephant are particularly plentiful and Lion and Leopard are often seen. As with the campsite in the Central Kalahari, nothing is fenced and wild animals move freely through the camp – especially at night.
Day 6 KHWAI RIVER.
Early morning and late afternoon game drives with ‘brunch’, ‘siesta’ and light lunch in between.
Most of the game viewing takes place along the banks of the Khwai river, but there are a great many game drive ‘tracks’ covering the entire area, ensuring wonderful game viewing and beautiful scenery.
Day 7 KHWAI RIVER.
Game drives as per day 6. As in the Kalahari – the solitude and beauty of this area, combined with the generally superb game viewing, make this a most memorable visit. Camping in the way we would allows guests to be as close as possible to nature, but in comfort and safety – a most rewarding experience.
Day 8 KHWAI RIVER - MAUN (by road – 160km sand track + 40km tar).
Accommodation : Chalets at Island Safari Lodge.
After an early breakfast, guests would depart for Maun, via Moremi game reserve. Almost the entire day would be spent exploring Moremi (with a picnic lunch) – this is an area of great beauty and boasting a lot of wild game ! The game drive tracks / routes follow the edge of the permanent water of the delta, providing fantastic game viewing opportunities.
Late afternoon arrival back in Maun.
Day 9 MAUN - JOHANNESBURG - CAPE TOWN.
Morning or midday flight to Johannesburg and/or Cape Town.
Guides would transfer guests to the airport in time to catch flight.
Guides and vehicles would then return to South Africa.
