Madikwe Game Reserve is a prime wildlife safari destination with mostly luxury accommodation venues. Madikwe is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa and is malaria free. Besides many other wildlife species, the "Big 5" can also be found in the reserve. Accommodation in Madikwe is mainly in luxury private game lodges rates 4 and 5 stars and is of the highest standard. Located in South Africa along the Botswana border, 20km from Gaborone, the reserve lies within a transition region between the Lowveld bush and the Kalahari thornveld. As a result the region is host to an incredible diversity of species from both ecosystems. The rich diversity of vegetation ensures a wide range of game and the topography offers ideal game viewing opportunities. Madikwe is home to 66 mammal species including the Big 5 and more than 300 resident and migrant bird species. An interesting feauture of the Madikwe Game Reserve is that it is one of the only areas in Africa where the springbok and the Kalahari gemsbok meet naturally; normally they both prefer to reside in completely different habitats. Madikwe has 30 lodges within its boundaries; these lodges provide comfortable accommodation for safari travellers. There are also Madikwe community lodges; these lodges are run by locals and all of the profit goes directly towards the upliftment of this region. The reserve is divided into 2 main areas. The area north of the Molatedi Dam is fenced and stocked with all the historically indigenous wild animals' including elephant, rhinoceros, lion, leopard and buffalo. As part of future developments for the park, the dam area will be fenced separately and stocked with smaller, non-dangerous animals - thus allowing free movement of tourists and maximum utilisation of the dam. Day visitors are allowed in the Reserve only if they book through a lodge prior to the arrival date.
