The Kruger National Park is the most sought-after safari destination in South Africa. The Kruger National Park in South Africa is one of the greatest game reserves in the world and one of the oldest. The greater Kruger National Park is over 2 million hectares in size (about the size of Belgium) and includes large tracts of private game reserves on its Western border. Home to Africa’s Big Five animals, hundreds of bird species and six different ecosystems, the Kruger National Park is one of the most diverse game reserves in the world. Interestingly, the term "big 5" refers not to the 5 biggest mammals in the Park, but it dates back to the early days of hunting when the buffalo, leopard, lion, elephant and rhino were considered the most dangerous animals to hunt (in that order). There are not many pristine, untouched wilderness areas in the world that are as well preserved and yet also as accessible as the Kruger National Park. A visit to this magnificent reserve cannot be rivalled – but it can be enriched by a stay at one of its luxury private lodges. The park is 350km from North to South, and it is impossible to see it all in one trip. There is so much to see and experience. The Kruger Park is truly a place you learn to love, and many people return to the park year after year fro their annual family holiday. You are advised to take precautions against malaria, but the risk of it should not stop you from visiting the Kruger National Park. The Kruger Park has a hot, sub-tropical climate and most of the year it is hot during the day (above 25° C). In the summer months of October to April it can be very hot, but there are advantages - the bush is green and lush, the young impalas are born in late November and offer lots of entertaining viewing, and the thunderstorms can be spectacular. This is also the best time of the year for birding. The winter months from May to September offer pleasant day time temperatures and at night time it can be a little chilly. The bush during the winter months is rather dry and may not look as attractive as the lush, green vegetation, but it is easier to spot the animals in the dry season.
