Cape Town Beaches
The Mother City is renowned for its picturesque beaches, which attract thousands of visitors to the city each summer. There are many beautiful beaches in and around Cape Town, but the water is quite cold. With the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other, you can choose which sea to swim in as Cape Town has beaches all around its coast.
In False Bay (Indian Ocean), there are some gorgeous beaches and the water is relatively warm – reaching up to 22-24˚C during the summer. If you prefer the Indian Ocean, we recommend The Strand (towards The Winelands), Fish Hoek or Boulders Beach, where you may easily share the beach with the Jackass Penguins who live there.
We find that the nicest beaches are on the Atlantic side, in Clifton and Camps Bay, but the water is much colder here, rarely getting higher than 16-17˚C. Clifton has four smaller beaches that can only be reached by descending several stairs (which are also the only way back up!). The beaches are beautiful with their white sand and crystal waters, and they are protected from the wind.
Camps Bay Beach is on the same road as Clifton, and it is a long stretch of beach lined with palm trees. Across the road, you’ll find several trendy cafés, restaurants and bars, which are perfect after a day on the beach.
During the summer holidays (mid-December – mid-January), the beaches are busy and parking can be difficult, so get there early!
